Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux and Gastric Acidity
Gastric acidity is a plague of modern man. Stress, fatty food, caffeine, alcohol, lack of sleep, skipped meals, all of these put you on your back. The burning sensation in your chest and throat is unbearable, and it gets worse at night. Doctors prescribe medications that, indeed, work quickly, but over time have side effects like nutrient malabsorption and weakened stomach lining. What we didn’t know is that our grandparents already had the solutions, right there in the garden, in the kitchen, on the shelves with remedies that had been passed down through generations.
Gastric acidity doesn’t appear out of nowhere. It’s the result of a combination of too much food, too much worry and too little sleep. But the remedies below can be extraordinary, especially if you combine them with a few lifestyle changes. I won’t guarantee miracles, but many people have found relief after 2-3 weeks of treatment.
Remedy 1: Wormwood Tea with Mouse-Tail Root
Wormwood is bitter, but that’s precisely its power. The bitter compounds stimulate normal production of gastric juices and improve stomach functioning. Mouse-tail root (a small forest plant, often called Filipendula) helps regenerate the damaged mucosa and provides a protective effect against further irritation.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of dried wormwood leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon of dried mouse-tail root
- 250 ml of boiling water
How to prepare: Place both ingredients in boiling water and let steep for 8-10 minutes (wormwood can become too bitter if over-steeped). Strain carefully and drink hot, 20 minutes before your main meals. Consume 2-3 cups per day, especially before lunch and dinner when digestion is most active. Use for 4-6 consecutive weeks, then take a 7-10 day break to avoid adaptation. Why it works: wormwood contains absinthin which stimulates normal gastric fluid secretion and normalizes stomach pH, while mouse-tail root is rich in tannins that regenerate the gastric mucosa and strengthen the protective lining.
Remedy 2: Water with Corn Starch and Baking Soda
A truly remarkable recipe. Starch forms a protective layer, and baking soda neutralizes acid. Their combination is unstoppable.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of food-grade corn starch
- 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
- 200 ml of warm water
How to prepare: Dissolve the starch in cold water first (otherwise it gets lumpy), then add the warm water and baking soda. Stir well and drink immediately on an empty stomach. Use 1-2 times per day, morning and evening. Use this recipe for 3-4 weeks, with 7-day breaks between cycles. Why it works: starch creates a mucilaginous layer that protects the mucosa, and baking soda neutralizes acid instantly.
Remedy 3: Sage Tea with Honey
Sage, as country people call it, is not just for sore throat. For the stomach, it’s a perfect calming agent. Combined with honey, it becomes a soothing potion.
Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons of dried sage leaves
- 250 ml of boiling water
- 1 teaspoon of raw honey
How to prepare: Place sage leaves in boiling water and let steep for 12 minutes. Strain, add honey and drink hot, 15 minutes before meals. Consume 2-3 cups per day. This recipe is safe and can be used long-term for 6-8 weeks without side effects. Why it works: sage contains volatile oils with antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties, and honey protects the mucosa.
Remedy 4: Smoothie with Coconut, Banana and Hazelnut Oil
A modern remedy with traditional ingredients. Coconut is alkaline and neutralizes acid, banana is rich in potassium that soothes muscles, and hazelnut oil has miraculous effects.
Ingredients:
- 3 tablespoons of coconut pulp (unroasted)
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 teaspoon of hazelnut oil (available in shops)
- 200 ml of water
- 1 teaspoon of raw honey
How to prepare: Put coconut pulp, banana and hazelnut oil in a blender with water. Blend well. Add honey. Drink immediately, once per day, preferably at breakfast. Use for 4-5 weeks. Why it works: coconut is alkaline and neutralizes acid, banana contains pectin that soothes the mucosa, and hazelnut oil contains compounds that reduce inflammation.
Remedy 5: Infusion of Rosehip Leaves with Chamomile
Rosehip is more than just a berry. The leaves (and roots too) have impressive effects on digestion. With chamomile, it becomes a truly calming potion.
Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons of dried rosehip leaves
- 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers
- 250 ml of boiling water
- 1 teaspoon of honey (optional)
How to prepare: Place both ingredients in boiling water and let steep for 10-12 minutes. Strain, add honey and drink hot. Consume 2 cups per day, preferably after meals. This recipe is gentle and safe, can be used for 6-8 weeks without issues. Why it works: rosehip contains polyphenols that reduce gastric inflammation, and chamomile has antispasmodic properties that relieve cramps.
Remedy 6: Water with Fermented Soy Extract
Fermented soy has enzymes that aid digestion extraordinarily. I didn’t discover this, but people from Asia who have used it for thousands of years did.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of fermented soy paste (raw miso)
- 200 ml of warm water
- Juice from half a lemon (optional)
How to prepare: Dissolve the soy paste in warm water (not boiling, otherwise the enzymes die). Add lemon juice if you like. Drink warm, 20 minutes before meals. Use 1-2 times per day. This recipe is very safe and can be used long-term for 8-10 weeks. Why it works: fermented soy contains beneficial lactobacilli that protect the mucosa and aid digestion, and its enzymes reduce inflammation.
Remedy 7 (Bonus): Warm Coconut Milk with Turmeric
A recipe that completely calms the stomach. Coconut milk is alkaline and protective, while turmeric reduces inflammation.
Ingredients:
- 200 ml of natural coconut milk (not from store with sugars)
- 1/4 teaspoon of ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon of raw honey
- A pinch of black pepper (helps turmeric absorption)
How to prepare: Heat the coconut milk gently in a pot (don’t boil). Add turmeric and pepper, stir well. Add honey. Drink warm, 30 minutes before meals. Use 1-2 times per day. Use for 4-6 weeks. Why it works: coconut milk creates a protective layer, turmeric reduces gastric inflammation, and black pepper amplifies curcumin absorption.
Additional Tips
- Eat slowly and chew well, around 30 chews per bite. Good chewing significantly reduces stomach workload.
- Avoid alcohol, excessive caffeine (no more than one cup per day), chocolate and fatty, heavily spiced foods.
- Don’t lie down immediately after eating. Wait 3-4 hours, otherwise acid refluxes into the esophagus causing nighttime heartburn.
- Drink water instead of acidic juices and sodas. Alkaline water is even better for severe cases.
- Try to reduce physical and emotional stress. Stress directly worsens acidity through neurohormonal mechanisms.
- Elevate the head of your bed by 15-20 cm. This helps gravity keep acid in the stomach.
- If acidity persists for more than 4-5 weeks with natural remedies, consult a gastroenterologist to rule out ulcers, helicobacter pylori or other serious conditions.
