Traditional remedies for cold and flu

Traditional Remedies for Cold and Flu

Cold and flu are seasonal ailments that can leave us bedridden for several days. Our grandmothers knew a wealth of natural remedies that helped the body get through these difficult periods more easily. Here are some of the most effective traditional cures.

Remedy 1: Linden Blossom Tea with Honey and Lemon

Linden blossom is considered one of the most powerful natural remedies against colds, thanks to its sudorific and anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Ingredients:

    • 2 teaspoons of dried linden blossoms
    • 300 ml of boiling water
    • 1 teaspoon of honey
    • Juice from half a lemon
  • How to prepare: Pour boiling water over the linden blossoms and let steep for 10-12 minutes, covered. Strain, add honey (after the tea has cooled slightly) and lemon juice. Drink 3-4 cups per day, especially before bedtime.

Remedy 2: Onion and Honey Syrup

A classic Romanian remedy, passed down through generations, that helps fight flu symptoms.

  • Ingredients:

    • 1 large onion, peeled and sliced into rings
    • 3-4 tablespoons of honey
  • How to prepare: Layer the onion rings in a jar and cover with honey. Let it macerate overnight (at least 8 hours). Take 1 tablespoon of the resulting syrup 3-4 times a day. It has expectorant and antimicrobial effects.

Remedy 3: Garlic with Warm Milk

Garlic is considered a natural antibiotic, and combined with warm milk, its effects become even more powerful.

  • Ingredients:

    • 2-3 cloves of garlic, crushed
    • 200 ml of milk
    • 1 teaspoon of honey (optional)
  • How to prepare: Warm the milk on low heat without boiling it. Add the crushed garlic and let it sit for 5 minutes to release its active compounds. Strain, add honey and drink warm, preferably in the evening before bed.

Remedy 4: Chamomile and Eucalyptus Steam Inhalation

Steam inhalation is an excellent method for clearing the airways blocked by mucus.

  • Ingredients:

    • 2 tablespoons of dried chamomile flowers
    • 3-4 drops of eucalyptus essential oil
    • 1 litre of hot water
  • How to prepare: Pour the hot water into a wide bowl, add the chamomile and eucalyptus oil. Cover your head with a large towel and inhale the steam for 10-15 minutes with your eyes closed. Repeat 2-3 times a day.

Remedy 5: Chicken Soup with Vegetables

Chicken soup is not just a comfort food — it has genuine anti-inflammatory properties and helps keep the body hydrated.

  • Ingredients:

    • Chicken pieces (wings or thighs)
    • Carrots, celery, parsnip, onion
    • Garlic, fresh parsley
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • How to prepare: Simmer the chicken with the chopped vegetables on low heat for 1-2 hours. Add the crushed garlic and chopped fresh parsley in the last 5 minutes. Serve warm, 2-3 times a day. The hot liquid helps thin out nasal secretions.

Remedy 6: Mulled Wine with Cinnamon and Cloves

A traditional remedy, used especially during the cold season, that helps warm the body and fight cold symptoms.

  • Ingredients:

    • 200 ml of red wine
    • 1 cinnamon stick
    • 3-4 cloves
    • 2 tablespoons of honey
    • Peel of one orange
  • How to prepare: Warm the wine on low heat with the cinnamon, cloves and orange peel, without boiling. Let it infuse for 10 minutes. Strain, add honey and drink warm. Consume only one serving per day, in the evening.
