Natural Remedies for SIBO
SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) seems like a complicated disease with a strange name, but it’s actually quite simple to understand if explained properly. Good bacteria live in the colon, at the end of your intestines, and that’s perfect. But when bacteria are found in the small intestine, which is where your nutrients should be absorbed, serious and annoying problems arise. Relentless bloating that makes your day impossible, uncontrolled diarrhea or stubborn constipation, weight loss without reason, and fatigue that exhausts you day and night. You feel like someone pressed pause on your body.
Why? These bacteria in the wrong place eat your nutrients before you can absorb them, and produce gases that bloat you like a circus balloon. You feel bloated right after eating, like your intestine reacts with panic to food. It’s not in your head. It’s real dysfunction.
Why does SIBO appear? Poor intestinal motility caused by chronic stress, abdominal surgery, aging, sedentary lifestyle, eating too fast without chewing properly, antibiotics that destabilize the ecosystem, and sugar-filled diet are the main causes. Village elders didn’t have “SIBO” as a diagnosis, but they had “wretched bloating that steals your life” that was cured with the right herbs and normal thinking returned. We just didn’t have the elegant diagnostic name.
Remedy 1: Fennel and Coriander Tea
Fennel and coriander are ancient remedies for digestive problems, used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine.
Ingredients:
- 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds (freshly crushed slightly with a mortar)
- 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds (slightly crushed)
- 400 ml of filtered water
- A piece of fresh ginger (2 cm, sliced not crushed to preserve enzymes)
How to prepare: Boil seeds and ginger in water for 12-15 minutes on low heat. Don’t let it boil hard, just gentle simmering. Strain through a fine mesh and drink one cup 3 times daily after meals, not with meals. Continue for 8-10 weeks without skipping. Fennel has carminative properties (it reduces excessive gas by promoting their expulsion). Coriander helps motility of the small intestine and has mild antimicrobial effect against SIBO bacteria. Ginger aids peristalsis and helps push food through at proper speed.
Why it works: The combination addresses SIBO’s root cause. You’re not just fighting bacteria, you’re restoring proper intestinal movement that prevents bacteria from accumulating in the first place.
Remedy 2: Lovage Root Powder and Wormwood
Lovage is the herb for lazy intestines, used in European folk medicine for centuries specifically for digestive sluggishness.
Ingredients:
- 25 grams of dried lovage roots (finely crushed but not powdered)
- 1 teaspoon of dried wormwood
- 500 ml of filtered water
- Raw honey (1 teaspoon)
How to prepare: Boil roots and wormwood in water for 20 minutes on low heat to extract all active compounds. Strain through fine mesh and add honey while still warm. Drink one cup twice daily on an empty stomach, preferably 30 minutes before meals. Continue for 10 weeks without interruption. Lovage contains phthalides that stimulate intestinal movements directly and promote peristalsis. It also has mild antimicrobial effect against SIBO bacteria. Wormwood helps immune system rebalancing and reduces the inflammatory response that often accompanies bacterial overgrowth.
Why it works: Lovage doesn’t just kill bacteria, it restores proper intestinal motility. This is crucial because SIBO persists when motility is poor. By fixing movement, you prevent bacteria from reaccumulating.
Remedy 3: Linden Blossom and Chamomile Tea
For SIBO accompanied by inflammation and pain.
Ingredients:
- 5-6 linden flowers
- 1 teaspoon of dried chamomile flowers
- 1 teaspoon of wormwood
- 350 ml of water
How to prepare: Pour boiling water over flowers and cover for 12-15 minutes. Strain and drink one cup twice daily. Continue for 8 weeks. Linden has sedative and calming effects, chamomile reduces inflammation and has antiparasitic effect. Wormwood helps the immune system.
Remedy 4: Sage and Rosemary Infusion
For SIBO with associated constipation.
Ingredients:
- 6-8 fresh sage leaves
- 1 small branch of fresh rosemary
- 400 ml of water
How to prepare: Boil sage and rosemary in water for 8-10 minutes. Strain and drink one cup twice daily on an empty stomach. Continue for 8-10 weeks. Sage has direct antimicrobial effect, while rosemary stimulates motility. Both help more regular intestinal movements.
Remedy 5: Chicken Soup with Garlic and Wormwood
Not quite a tea, but an essential part of treatment.
Ingredients:
- 400 grams of chicken breast
- 8-10 cloves of fresh garlic
- 1 teaspoon of wormwood
- 2 large carrots
- 2 liters of water
- Salt
How to prepare: Boil chicken and carrots for 1.5 hours on low heat. Halfway through, add garlic and wormwood. Strain and eat the meat and soup. It’s recommended daily for 6-8 weeks. Garlic contains allicin which destroys pathogenic bacteria, while collagen from chicken helps regenerate the small intestine.
Remedy 6: Plantain Seed Powder and Ginger
For SIBO with blockage.
Ingredients:
- 50 grams of plantain seeds (finely ground)
- A piece of fresh ginger (3 cm), finely grated
- 400 ml of water
- A teaspoon of honey
How to prepare: Boil seeds and ginger in water for 15-20 minutes on low heat. Strain and drink one cup twice daily. Continue for 8-10 weeks. Plantain seeds contain mucilage that soothes the intestines and aids motility, while ginger stimulates intestinal movements.
Prevention and Daily Support Measures
- Eat slowly and chew 30 times per bite. Enzymes in saliva are essential for starting digestion.
- Small portions, more often. Eat only when you’re truly hungry, not out of habit.
- Avoid cold foods from the refrigerator throughout treatment. Heat helps motility.
- Light movement after eating, a gentle walk, don’t lie down on the couch immediately.
- Sleep 8-9 hours per night. Stress aggravates SIBO and weakens motility.
- Drink 3-4 liters of water per day, but NOT with meals. Water with food dilutes digestive enzymes.
- Completely avoid foods that cause bloating immediately, even if they’re considered “healthy.”
- Think of your intestines as a motor that needs easy fuel, not concrete blocks.
- Regular movement, neither lazy nor stressed. Balance is key to recovery.
Signs of Progress in SIBO Treatment
After 2-3 weeks you should notice easier bloating, especially in the evening. After 4 weeks, your bowel rhythm should stabilize. After 6 weeks, energy should increase significantly. After 8 weeks, bloating should be almost nonexistent. The process is slow, but it produces consistent results. If you notice no change after 6 weeks, you might need medical help.
Diet Continuation After Treatment
After 10 weeks, you can slowly reintroduce other foods. But alongside the natural remedies, maintain proper chewing and small portions long-term. SIBO easily comes back if you don’t eat carefully. Cooked vegetables, brown rice, chicken and fish will be your basic foods. Avoid sugar and processed foods forever. Digestion is a process that requires respect and attention. Think of your intestines as a delicate machine, not a garbage disposal.
When to See a Doctor
If after 10 weeks of natural treatment symptoms persist or worsen significantly, see a doctor. Hydrogen and methane breath test can confirm SIBO and its severity. Your doctor can recommend specific antibiotics for SIBO, such as rifaxomycin or neomycin. But whatever your doctor decides, these herbs can be given simultaneously for support and won’t interfere with medication. Medical supervision ensures you’re on the right track.
