Calamus (Acorus calamus): Benefits, Uses and How to Prepare It IMPORTANT: Calamus contains a substance called beta-asarone, found in large amounts especially in the Asian (tetraploid) variety of the plant. Beta-asarone is considered potentially toxic and possibly carcinogenic in high doses and prolonged use. For this reason, calamus should NOT be used over long periods, in large doses, or by pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, or people with liver or kidney conditions. Whenever possible, choose the European variety (Acorus calamus var. calamus), which is lower in beta-asarone, and use the plant only in short courses. Before starting any course, especially if you are on medication or have a chronic illness, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
